If you are planning a trip to Tokyo, Asakusa is a must-visit destination that you simply cannot miss. It is easily accessible from both Haneda and Narita airports, attracting travellers not only from all over Japan but from all across the globe!
When talking about Asakusa, the first thing that comes to mind is Kaminarimon Gate, famously marked by its giant red lantern. Did you know that its official name is actually "Furaijinmon" (Gate of the Wind and Thunder Gods)? The gate is guarded by the gods of wind and rain, who watch over the town. If you look at the big red lantern from the front, it says "Kaminarimon," but from the back, it reads "Furaijinmon"—so make sure to check both sides! Interestingly, this iconic gate has been destroyed by fires many times throughout history, and the current structure was rebuilt in 1960 thanks to a generous donation by Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic (then Matsushita Electric Industrial).
Passing through Kaminarimon leads you straight to Nakamise-dori, a shopping street stretching toward the main hall. Said to be one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, it has flourished since the Edo period. Along the roughly 250-meter approach, a vibrant array of small shops lines the street. It is so much fun to stroll along, pick up cute, traditional Japanese accessories, and sample delicious local treats.
If you are a dog lover, you're in for a treat! During my recent trip, I discovered a lovely shop selling adorable dog clothes and toys. They even had items featuring traditional Japanese kimono patterns, which were just too cute. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, it’s a great idea to measure your dog and note down their size beforehand. You might just find the perfect souvenir for your precious dog waiting for you! (Information of 2026)
Senso-ji Temple, located at the end of the street, is the oldest temple in Tokyo. Inside the main hall, you can admire stunning ceiling paintings, and at night, the magnificent five-story pagoda lights up, creating a breathtaking and peaceful atmosphere.
Asakusa is also a paradise for food lovers! For meals, local classics like sukiyaki, tempura, unagi (eel), menchi-katsu (minced meat cutlets), and dojo-nabe (loach hot pot) are very famous. When it comes to sweets, you have freshly baked, crispy ningyo-yaki (Asakusa's signature cake), dorayaki, kaminari-okoshi, chestnut sweet potato kintoki, rice crackers, and dango and more! Of course, soft-serve ice cream and pudding are readily available, and matcha (green tea) sweets—which I'm sure are popular in your home country, too—are everywhere. During my visit, I had a huge bowl of matcha shaved ice at a traditional sweet shop, and it was absolutely delicious! There were also plenty of strawberry-themed treats, so be sure to try out all kinds of delicious sweets.
You also won't want to miss the retro and fun experiences Asakusa has to offer. Many tourists love renting kimonos to wear while walking through Nakamise and the streets of Asakusa, as they look stunning against the cityscape. Taking photos in a kimono with traditional temples or Nakamise as a backdrop will make for an unforgettable travel memory. Hopping on a rickshaw (jinrikisha) is another great option, where a personal guide will take you to hidden scenic spots. You can even visit Asakusa Hanayashiki, the oldest amusement park in Japan! For hidden photo spots, the area behind Senso-ji Temple is relatively uncrowded and great for pictures, and walking from Asakusa Station toward the Sumida River offers a gorgeous view of the Tokyo Skytree.
If you want an even better view of the cityscape, I highly recommend heading to the 8th floor of the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center. From here, you can enjoy a free, panoramic view of Asakusa! Looking down at Nakamise-dori from above is truly breathtaking, and you can also spot unique buildings along the Sumida River and the towering Tokyo Skytree. Additionally, the information desk on the 1st floor (ground floor) sometimes offers English-language activity guides, so feel free to drop by and ask the staff if you're curious!
I know I’ve only scratched the surface—I’m sure you’ve found some amazing hidden gems in Asakusa that I missed! Please share your wonderful experiences with me in the comments below! That’s all for now! Be sure to visit the pathtojapan.com blog for more!
